In my opinion, grouse have the most intricately detailed plumage of all birds. They also have elaborate mating displays. The male Ruffed Grouse, for example, flares its tail feathers and flaps its front wings, creating a ‘drumming’ sound as part of its courtship display. It is a common sound in Alberta forests in the spring.
